What makes a distillery a “craft” distillery?

A craft distillery is independently owned and produces spirits using hands-on techniques, local ingredients whenever possible, and in small batches to ensure quality and authenticity.

Nova Scotia is home to a growing number of craft distilleries! You can visit our Distillery Directory to explore locations, tasting experiences, and where to purchase local spirits.

You can support local distillers by visiting their distilleries, purchasing their spirits and learning about their craft. Don’t forget to tag us on your social media posts – we love to hear about your experiences, where you are from and even your amazing drink recipes!

Nova Scotia spirits are available directly from distilleries, select NSLC stores and specialty retail locations. Check our Where to Buy page for details.

Absolutely! We welcome and encourage your visit as many of the fine artisanal spirits are small batch and can not be carried at the liquor commission.  Many distilleries offer tours, tastings, and behind-the-scenes experiences. Visit our Distillery Directory to plan your visit.

Some distilleries distribute their products beyond Nova Scotia, but availability varies. Check with individual distilleries.  Many distillers can ship but you must reach out to the distiller directly.  See the members page.

We participate in the International Spirits Festivals and many distillers set up for events and shows around the province. We also have members attending farmers markets and special events throughout the province. Following distillers on Instagram and Facebook will give you a heads up to where we will be!

The Certification Program

What is the Certified 100% Nova Scotian Distilled program?

This certification ensures that a spirit is distilled and bottled entirely in Nova Scotia by the original producer, using their own techniques and at a limited scale. Look for the Nova Scotian Distilled mark to know you’re getting a truly local product! (link to Certification page).  It is important to note that the certification is awarded by product, not by distillery.  Only spirits that are distilled or re-distilled in Nova Scotia by the producer qualify. Spirits that are blended, flavoured, or aged without re-distillation do not meet the criteria.  Certified products will display the official “Nova Scotian Distilled” mark on their bottles, ensuring authenticity and quality.

Distillers must apply to CDANS and meet strict criteria, including full in-province production and adherence to artisanal techniques. Certification is reviewed annually to maintain high standards.

Distillers

I want to start a Distillery in Nova Scotia, can you help?

Congratulations on making the decision to start your business here! We don’t offer direct business support to start your business, but we can provide some general guidance on which government agencies regulate and approve permits for production, and general considerations. We can arrange for you to have a conversation with one of our distillers if you have specific questions as well.
